Three Fall Trips you’ll love from Alpharetta Georgia

Collingwood Luxury Apartment Community is conveniently located at 3400 Kimball Bridge Road, Alpharetta, Georgia, close to everything Alpharetta! Not far from Northside Alpharetta Medical Campus, Club Avalon, Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, North Point Mall, Alpharetta YMCA, and Big Creek Greenway Trail, as well as one of a kind boutiques, farmers markets, restaurants and coffee shops, Collingwood is the perfect place to call home. And, don’t forget that we are in the New Prospect Elementary School, Webb Bridge Middle School, and Alpharetta High School system area too! But, with Fall finally in the air, the Idea Specialists© at Collingwood Apartment Homes want to recommend three awesome weekend getaways for you—Family, Adventure, and Romantic trips that we’re sure you’ll to want to try. 1. Family Fun in Chattanooga, Tennessee The New York Times named Chattanooga one of the “Top 45 Places to Go” in the world and it’s easy to see why. Just over two hours from Alpharetta, Georgia this family -riendly city is chock full of great attractions, scenic views, history and family options for dining and lodging. Plan your family trip to include the Tennessee Aquarium and Chattanooga Riverfront, Creative Discovery Museum, and Rock City Gardens. Your family can explore the Aquarium’s new “Island Life” exhibition, then enjoy time on the Riverwalk where you can bike, boat, walk or just play along the scenic Tennessee River with more than 13 miles of trails and parks to explore. At the Creative Discovery Museum, you’ll find a wide variety of hands on learning exhibits your kid can participate in including River Play and Inventors’ Clubhouse. Just a few miles up Lookout Mountain, you’ll find Rock City, featuring massive ancient rock formations, gardens with over 400 native plant species, and breathtaking “See 7 States” panoramic views. After a day of fun with the kids, check into Residence Inn by Marriott, centrally located within walking distance of most downtown attractions and featuring living spaces in each room along with an indoor pool. Then head over to grab some kid-friendly grub at Café City Diner on Carter Street or our all-time favorite pizza place, Community Pie, with kids’ menus with just the right amount of food, a good variety of “outside the usual kid box” choices. 2. Looking for Adventure — Try hiking Blood Mountain If you’re in the mood for an outdoor adventure, plan to hike Blood Mountain, under an hour from Collingwood nestled in the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Fall is the busiest time of year—the leaves are in their penultimate color season and the mountain’s status as the highest peak on the Georgia segment of the Appalachian Trail ensures its popularity year-round. Stop by all things outdoor retailer REI in Mansell Crossing to stock up on hiking gear before you go. If you want to make it an overnight moment, book one of the pet-friendly cabins at Blood Mountain Cabins and Country Store (you can stock up on food supplies and such there too), or The Smith House and The Dahlonega Square Hotel in Dahlonega, Georgia. And, these two also offer wine tours if you need a respite from all that hiking! 3. Romance is in the Air—at glorious Lake Rabun Hotel & Restaurant Want to get away to relax, rejuvenate, and celebrate romance? Well this nature-inspired boutique hotel has you covered! Lightly resting among the North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains, Lake Rabun Hotel & Restaurant offers romantic charm, and uniquely decorated rooms and cabins. We love the Appalachia Room with its rustic hewn boards and chinking, featuring a king-sized bed coupled with soft downy comforters and high thread count sheets. Mmmmm! Why leave the room, you ask? Because this destination also features an award-winning farm to table restaurant with sustainably sourced menu items. Might we recommend their signature dish, the Pecan Encrusted Mountain Trout? It was named by Explore Georgia as one of the “Top 100 Meals Loved By Locals” and now we know why! The hotel staff is happy to assist you in arranging custom mountain adventures, vineyard or distillery tours, golf, horseback riding, zip lining (if that spells romance for you, go for it) or boating on the lake, but we would be doing you a disservice if we didn’t mention their SPA—yes, SPA services. The hotel’s Relax and Renew couple’s package includes a $70 restaurant allowance and 60 minute couples massage. (Check with the hotel on details.) So, there you have it! Three totally wonderful experiences that you can enjoy on a fun Fall weekend all within less that a two-hour drive from Collingwood Apartment Homes. Give them a try and let us know how your own weekend getaway goes!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month—Think Pink and Participate in Alpharetta

Breast Cancer Awareness

October is known for a multitude of wonderful things — fall, changing leaves, crisp temperatures, football, and trick or treat; but it’s also known for something super important to everyone — it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a reminder to get a mammogram. We’ve all been touched by knowing someone who has, or has had, breast cancer, so we know that awareness is power. The Idea Specialists© at Collingwood Apartment Homes want to share just a few of the ways you can help locally support people affected by the disease and those searching for ways to cure it. Grab your bestie and plan to attend J. McLaughlin’s Sip and Shop this Saturday, Oct. 5 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Alpharetta. Your purchases will result in a 15 percent donation to the Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta foundation. Personally, we have our eye on this oh so comfortable Skyler Cashmere Wrap with its soft pink and touch of baby blue shade. You can also enjoy fabulous refreshments while you support this breast cancer awareness event, so make plans to attend. Also this weekend on Saturday and Sunday Oct. 5-6, one of our favorite nearby outdoor destination locations Scottsdale Farms is hosting its Fourth Annual Think Pink Weekend to help raise awareness of breast cancer. The family-friendly event offer a wide variety of activities such as the Pumpkin Patch, Corn Maze, and our favorite, hayrides from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There’s also live music, face painting, and a Planting Seminar with Wayne Juers, “The Plant Doc” (is there anything he doesn’t know about plants? We don’t think so) among other scheduled events. A portion of proceeds from the event including all tips, corn maze and hayride fees, and donations will be used to support TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that assist to provide unmet survivorship needs of women with breast cancer in Greater Atlanta. Better yet, all donations will be matched by the Gianturco Family Foundation. Another event near and dear to our hearts is Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Walk that takes place Oct. 26 this year. The American Cancer Society-sponsored walk raises funds to support groundbreaking breast cancer research, life-saving education and critical patient services. It’s non-competitive, so start a team or cheer one on. We especially love that the event features a special area for survivors to hang out in. Registration starts at 7 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. And, if you are looking for a spacious, luxurious apartment home, stop by Collingwood Apartment Homes at 3400 Kimball Bridge Road in Alpharetta and take a tour. We look forward to seeing you.

Dog Days of Summer

Everyone can agree on one thing this August—it’s HOT. Luckily for residents at Collingwood Apartment Homes we have a large, lap style pool where you can cool off to your heart’s delight. But what about our furry friends? Dogs in particular need extra care this time of year. Here are some tips from the Idea Specialists© at Collingwood to ensure that your pooch stays safe during the summer heat. Hot Weather Tips for Your Pet   Be proactive about Vet Care. Things really heat up during the summer months, so make sure you pup is up to date on heartworm, and flea and tick protection so they can enjoy those walks outside or at the Pet Park at Collingwood without bringing home critters that can make everyone itch! Don’t leave your pet alone in the car on a warm day. It’s common sense to make sure animals are kept cool, but perhaps you get home and realize you need to make a store run, but your sweet pup hasn’t seen you all day, and you expect that you’ll just dash in and be back out in no time. Why not take your pet? Because in the summer heat, you can put your precious furry loved one in danger quickly if left in a car, even with windows cracked. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA), “On a 70-degree day, a car’s interior temperature can climb to 90 degrees. On an 85-degree day, it takes only 10 minutes for a car’s interior to top 100 degrees; in 30 minutes, the temperature can jump to 120 degrees.” Avoid Walking Your Dog in the Heat. Ground temperatures can be much higher than air temperatures. If walking your dog on pavement, test it by holding your hand on the surface for 10 seconds. If it’s uncomfortable for you, it’s uncomfortable for your pup. Burned paws can be incredibly painful for your pup and can lead to blisters, cracking or even missing pieces of the paw pad, so it’s important to consider the weather and walking surface before talking your pet out. Try taking your animal to our amazing Pet Park instead for needed exercise and fun. Keep Your Home Cool for your pets. According to rent.com, pet owners should do three things to keep their animals cool: Keep them hydrated; keep the air flowing; keep them groomed. To keep your animal hydrated consider using a larger bowl and add a few ice cubes in it for an extra treat. While you are at work or away from your home, be sure to set your air conditioner on a reasonable temperature so that pets stay comfortable. And, by grooming your pet, you’ll reduce the hair that can trap the heat. Just be sure to see a professional groomer for big jobs. Keep summer foods away from your pet. Summer is a great time to grill out especially with Collingwood’s Bar B Cue area. Just be aware that food and beverages often commonly found at barbeques can be poisonous to pets. Bones from cooked meats can splinter and cause death to your pet. And snacks such raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate and products with the sweetener xylitol may cause your dog or cat to have severe digestive ailments including death. So, enjoy the season, but keep harmful foods away from your pets, no matter how sweetly they beg. Remember, summer is a season that should be enjoyed by everyone including pets. Just make sure to help them enjoy these dog days of summer in a responsible, safe way.

A word about accessories: Don’t forget that pillows instantly refresh or pull a look together. Add in decorative outdoor-friendly pillow in the colors your desire. According to Best Reviews, the five top styles of outdoor lighting include Brightech light strand, Lighting Ever LED curtain lights, Brightown globe string lights, Taotronic LED waterproof string lights, and Urpower LED solar lights. Of course, no outdoor area would be complete without a variety of flowers and other easy to care for plants in beautifully designed containers. Get the look you want by following the three-step formula of thriller, filler, spiller. Find the container that suits your style at nearby shops including Pike Nurseries, which has several locations throughout the Alpharetta area, Urban Hardware, Lowe’s Garden Center, and Home Depot. Or to learn more about gardening, plan to visit the Alpharetta Garden Club, which meets the fourth Tuesday of each month. “Start with thriller which will be the big, bold focal point of your container plant designs. This plant provides an eye-catching vertical element. Angelonia is a good option,” says Melissa Scott, community manager for Collingwood Apartment homes. Other options can include tall ornamental grasses such as Purple Fountain Grass, or flowers such as Cosmos, Salvia and Dahlia. Filler is usually composed of mid-size, mounding or rounded plants that surround and enhance the thriller and fill the space in the planter. You can use one filler or opt for two or three different plants in your container gardening design. Lantana or Vinca are also good options because these selections do not require deadheading. Other filler options include: Petunias, Begonias, and Ageratum to name a few. Spillers are splashy plants that cascade and tumble over the sides of the container. Scott recommends Trailing Vinca. “It’s a beautiful plant with marvelous training capacity,” she says. She added that “Some residents prefer to acquire a ready-made container planting so they can simply can enjoy right away.” Other trailing options include: Sweet Potato Vine, Ivy and Alyssum. And get ready for the Fourth of July with Pike Nurseries Patriotic Planter class on June 22. Details can be found here. May is National Pet Month!

Collingwood Apartment Community is especially proud of our pet-friendly policies and Bark Park which provides an environment for residents with furry family members to enjoy. And since May is National Pet Month, we thought we’d highlight some of the reasons National Pet Month is observed. They are to: Promote the benefits of pet ownership Support pet adoption Make people aware of the benefits of pets for people and people for pets Increase public awareness of services available from professionals who work with animals Raise awareness of the role, value and contribution to society of working companion animals The developers of Collingwood Apartment Community understand the importance of giving residents and other community members places to spend quality playtime with their pets and to socialize with each other, says Melissa Scott, community manager. Residents of Collingwood Apartment Community and nearby neighbors are welcome to visit our Bark Park with their furry companions. Dog treats also are available in Collingwood Apartment Community resident lounges. Studies have shown spending time with pets, particularly dogs, can reduce stress, anxiety and depression. The American Heart Association has linked pet ownership with a reduced risk for heart disease. If you are interested in reducing stress in your life, you may want to consider adopting a pet. Below are several local nonprofit organizations that can help. The Atlanta Humane Society Mansell Campus features a Pet Adoption Center open to the public. The AHS campus is located on Mansell Road in Alpharetta.
